I have been very happy for years with Outlook Express for my e-mail service.
I had built up a large number of items (3000+) in my Sent Items folder. I
decided to empty the folder by selecting the Select all in the Edit box and
using my Delete key. It seemed to start the deleting process, but than it
stopped. Now, The whole system seems to have locked up and I cannot delete
anything. In the inbox I even tried moving items to the deleted items folder,
but received a message that the file cannot be moved. Can anyone help me with
this problem?

Were you just pressing Delete or using Shift-Delete?
If just Delete you would be copying messages into the Deleted Items
folder.

Perhaps it's time to flush the Deleted Items folder
and do a full file compaction? (Alt-F,F,F)

BTW to minimize the potential for problems with the compaction
I would close all OE windows except the main application window,
which would be open only at the root and set Work Offline first.

If the Deleted Items folder is corrupt you could try deleting
the whole Deleted Items.dbx file (when OE is not running.)

Good luck

After reading the post from Robert Aldwincle, I tried to delete by using the 'Shift,Delete' method. This worked and allowed me to delete the entire 'Sent' folder and my current 'Inbox' items. I still was not able to delete in the conventional method. I just went through the compacting proceedure (which I had never done) and I am now able to delete in the normal method and I believe that everything is back to prior working order.
Thank you Robert Aldwincle!!!!

I had the same problem crop up 4 days ago and could not complete my
compression, or delete files in sent or inbox. Followed the instructions of
Robert Aldwincle and wahla Outlook Express is working again.

I even downloaded and installed Microsoft Live Mail and installed it. It
worked OK but I still like Outlook Express and now will be able to continue
with it.
